Marine Vibration Sensors & Monitoring

For use in on-board vessels and in dockside equipment

Enhancing Reliability in the Marine Industry with Precision Vibration Monitoring

In the demanding and dynamic environment of the marine industry, where continuous operation and safety are paramount, the ability to detect mechanical faults before they lead to critical failures is essential. Hansford Sensors delivers reliable and robust vibration monitoring solutions tailored for marine vessels and dockside infrastructure, ensuring equipment uptime and minimising unplanned maintenance.

Applications on Board and Ashore

Hansford’s high-performance vibration sensors are engineered for both on-board marine applications and dockside machinery, including:

  • Pumps – Monitoring for imbalance, cavitation and mechanical looseness to ensure reliable fluid handling in ballast, cooling and bilge systems.
  • Fans & Ventilation Units – Detecting early signs of bearing wear and misalignment in essential HVAC and engine room systems.
  • Gearboxes – Ensuring gear mesh integrity and identifying bearing degradation to prevent drivetrain failures.
  • Generators & Alternators – Protecting against misalignment, imbalance and bearing defects to maintain consistent power supply.
  • Propulsion Systems – Monitoring vibration in motors, couplings and shafts to protect critical propulsion components from misalignment and premature wear.

Vibration Monitoring Solutions

Hansford Sensors offers both offline and online vibration monitoring systems to suit various levels of criticality and budget. Solutions include:

  • AC Accelerometers (e.g. HS-100 Series) – Designed for precision measurement of bearing and structural conditions across a wide frequency range.
  • 4-20mA Sensors (e.g. HS-420 Series) – Scaled output sensors ideal for integrating with shipboard PLCs and alarm systems.
  • Enclosures (e.g. HS-JE & HS-SE Series) – Built from stainless steel, polycarbonate or mild steel to withstand harsh marine environments.
  • Switch and Connection Boxes – Allow for convenient data collection in hard-to-reach equipment installations.

These components combine to deliver a predictive maintenance strategy that helps maritime engineers and technicians make informed maintenance decisions, reduce downtime, and optimise performance.

Built for Harsh Environments

Hansford Sensors’ marine-grade accelerometers are housed in corrosion-resistant stainless steel with sealed electronics for ingress protection, ensuring reliable operation in salt-laden, high-humidity conditions typical of marine environments.

Factors to consider

Selecting the best accelerometer or vibration sensor for metals processing depends on a number of factors. These include:

  • Availability of the plant
  • Cost of breakdown
  • Criticality of the machine/impact on the production process
  • Access to machine, guarding, health and safety implications
  • Environmental factors

We can provide solutions for both online and offline monitoring, with all our industrial accelerometers being designed for use in the toughest environments, including hazardous areas.

Typical solutions for the Marine Industry

Remote Monitoring

We offer a wide range of industrial accelerometers for marine applications. These include our proven AC sensors (HS-100 Series), which feature a 100mV/g output. This makes it quick and simple to connect to a remote switch or connection box (HS-BE), allowing standard handheld data collectors to be used to gather critical data.

High Temperature Applications

For high temperature applications, such as turbochargers, our advanced high temperature accelerometers (HS-105 Series) can be fitted to ensure consistent and accurate readings. These sensors can be wired either to a local connection box or via multi-core cabling to a higher level monitoring and control system.

Hazardous Area Applications

For hazardous area applications, such as cargo pumps in oil tankers or LPG carriers, we provide a range of ATEX approved HS-100I intrinsically safe accelerometers. These are easy to install and setup and in common with all our ship-board devices are designed to be used in earth-free circuits
